What is Luna?
Luna is a registered medical application (FDA-listed) that provides immersive VR experiences to support self‑management of pain and hot flashes, and to promote relaxation through guided breathing.
Clinicians use Luna to help patients regulate symptoms using distraction, cognitive‑behavioral techniques, and paced breathing in a calming virtual environment.
What does the app include?
Luna includes three main modules, accessible from the main menu:
- Hot Flashes
- Pain Management
- Guided Breathing
The Hot Flashes and Pain Management modules take place in the Frosty environment — a frozen winter landscape designed to support symptom relief.
General interaction and controls
- The patient uses the Trigger button to:
- Select modules and language
- Select symptom severity
- Skip voiceovers or subtitles during sessions
- Pressing the Pause button pauses the experience and opens a quit option.
- The application is generally recommended for use while sitting down.
Symptom rating (VAS)
At the beginning and end of each session, the patient is asked to rate symptom severity using a Visual Analog Scale (VAS) from 0–10:
- Pain
- Hot flashes
- General feeling
This helps track perceived symptom change across sessions.
Positioning and calibration
- An automatic horizontal calibration runs every time the app launches.
- Manual calibration can be triggered at any time by long‑pressing the Meta button on the right controller.
Lying down mode
- The patient can switch to a lying‑down point of view by:
- Looking 90° upward and selecting “Select to lie down”.
- To return to upright mode, select “Select for upright position” using the headset button.
Language and guidance options
Language selection
- Select the world icon to choose the interface language.
- Supported languages:
- English
- Hebrew
- Language choice is saved for future sessions.
No Guidance mode
- Luna can be used without voice guidance.
- Enable via three dots → No Guidance, then start the session.
Modules
Hot Flashes / Pain Management (Frosty)
An immersive experience combining cognitive‑behavioral therapy (CBT) elements with visual engagement to support symptom self‑management.
Main features:
- The patient explores the Frosty environment and scans nearby objects.
- When a snowflake icon appears on an object, gazing at it will freeze the object.
- Sessions are not time‑limited:
- When narration ends, the patient may choose to finish or continue exploring freely.
Pressing the Pause button on the left controller exits the experience and returns to the main menu.
Guided Breathing
A paced breathing exercise designed to support relaxation and autonomic regulation.
How it works:
- The patient practices breathing with a 5‑second inhale and 5‑second exhale.
- A bubble animation visually guides the breathing rhythm.
Progression:
- A 28‑day structured program:
- Week 1: 3‑minute sessions
- Week 2: 5‑minute sessions
- Week 3: 10‑minute sessions
- Week 4: 15‑minute sessions
- Each completed session contributes to a visual progress indicator, including a growing tree.
- Pressing the arrow button returns the patient to the main menu.
When should clinicians adjust or recommend Luna?
- For patients experiencing chronic pain or hot flashes who benefit from self‑management tools
- When relaxation, distraction, or paced breathing is clinically appropriate
- If patients prefer non‑pharmacological symptom regulation strategies
